Eco-logistics: minimising CO2 emissions
|
What is logistics?
Logistics, a term that first appeared in mid-18th-century military language, is the art of bringing means and resources to a desired place at the desired time. By 1980, logistics had crept into the civilian sphere by becoming a key competitive factor and a source of savings. As globalisation gathers speed, logistics has become crucial: companies’ share of logistical costs is rising at a steady pace and must be optimised. |
Taking an overview, involving partners
Aware of logistics’ environmental impact, in 2005 Groupe SEB teamed up with the ADEME, City of Paris, Ile de France region and Gaz de France in creating Club DEMETER, a Groupe Carrefour's initiative.
The club is a place where distributors, logistics partners, manufacturers and government agencies can share thoughts and experiences with the aim of promoting environment-friendly logistics. Working themes include the definition of relevant eco-logistic indicators to measure progress in this area. |

Eco-logistics : reducing our carbon footprint
Concerned to limit the environmental impact of transport generated by the manufacture and sale of its products, Groupe SEB reinforced its eco-logistics strategy in 2008. A logistics sustainable development committee was set up to coordinate and handle follow-up of measures to reduce CO2 emissions. To reduce its CO2 emissions, the Group has decided to act on two major parameters: to give priority to environmentally friendly modes of transportation (river, rail ...) and to aim a maximum loading rate for road haulage of transport units (trucks or other containers). |
