A GLOBAL DRIVE BASED ON ISO 14001 CERTIFICATION

The Group introduced a global environmental management system in 2003. Its priority is to prevent pollution, control the consumption of resources (energy and water) and reduce waste. This approach is reflected in the ISO 14001 certification of our sites, which is based on compliance with current laws and regulations on the one hand, and on the principle of continuous improvement in environmental performance and pollution prevention on the other.

By the end of 2022, 100% of our industrial sites will be ISO 14001 certified.

REDUCING THE CARBON FOOTPRINT OF OUR PLANTS

The Group has set targets for reducing the carbon intensity of its plants by the end of 2023, 2030 and 2050. To achieve its low-carbon targets, the Group is acting on two main levers :

  • Reducing energy consumption
  • Using renewable energies

CONSUMING LESS ENERGY

In 2019, the Group rolled out a Group standard on energy management, based on the essential requirements of ISO 50001. It has been incorporated into In 2019, the Group rolled out a Group standard on energy management, the internal audit manual and will gradually be applied to all sites, harmonising practices in terms of organisation, energy monitoring, training, etc. Several of the Group's sites, which are already ISO 50001 certified, are particularly advanced in this area: Erbach (Germany), Rumilly and Tournus (France), as well as most of WMF's European sites and the EMSA site in Emsdetten.

To optimise the energy balance of these sites, in 2020 the Group introduced a system for measuring, monitoring and controlling their energy consumption: DSM (digital shop-floor management) Energy. Already deployed across the whole of France, it is gradually being extended internationally.

DEVELOPING RENEWABLE ENERGIES

The Is-sur-Tille site in France was the first in the Group to install a solar-powered air-conditioning system in an assembly workshop where temperatures were very high in summer. Photovoltaic panels supply the electricity needed for the air conditioners, and when they are not working, the electricity is used for other purposes. This initiative improves working conditions through a carbon-neutral solution.

In 2019, solar panels were installed on the SEB Campus in Écully with the aim of covering 20% of its energy consumption, as well as at the subsidiary's head office in the Netherlands. In 2020, the production of photovoltaic electricity began on two industrial sites: Pont-Évêque in France and Rionegro in Colombia.

Other projects are under study, notably in France, China, Egypt, Vietnam and the United States, and each year sees the launch of one or two new renewable energy projects at a Group site.
